Sharing traditional stories with cutting edge technology

Air New Zealand
Matariki Mixed Reality Activation

The intention of this highly ambitious interactive project for Air New Zealand was to celebrate Matariki, support Te ao Māori and champion the use of Te reo Māori through storytelling.

We took the traditional cultural story of Matariki as told by cultural storyteller, Joe Harawira and interpreted it in a way that would be immersive and inclusive.

Through mixed reality, customers were transported onto digital replica of a 7m carved waka to fly through the guardians realms and into the sky to learn about Matariki all without leaving the room.

We blended the real and digital world authentically through the use of digital replicas, film and narration by our lead storyteller, Joe Harawira.

We built the whole experience digitally whilst maintaining cultural integrity which was enjoyed by visitors at Canterbury Museum in Christchurch and Te Puia in Rotorua.
